A Journey Through Compassion and Understanding

Dr Julie Perrin

“Sometimes life gets tough, and we feel stuck and unsure. Yet, a different perspective, a careful listening ear, can free us up, allowing us to draw upon our inner resources and enact the changes we seek.”

My Journey

A Tapestry of Professional Experiences in Health and Community

My professional journey in the health and community sector has been enriching and diverse. Over four decades, every individual, couple, and family I've encountered has shared a unique story, each reshaping my understanding and reinforcing the transformative power of human connection.

  • Diverse Roles in Clinical and Community Development

My career has spanned various roles in both urban and rural settings. From clinical work to community development and influencing policy in senior management positions, my mission has always been to effect meaningful change. As a part of both state/territory and national working groups, I've contributed to shaping policies and clinical practice guidelines, always with a focus on real-world impact.

  • A Focus on Complex Human Issues and Relationships

I've gravitated towards complex human issues and relationship challenges throughout my career. My work in drug and alcohol, couple and family therapy, and bereavement has been deeply fulfilling. In recent years, I've become particularly attuned to the profound grief experienced by siblings facing drug-related loss. The topic of drug-related sibling loss has been the focus of my in-depth PhD research, striving to bring light and understanding to this poignant area.

  • Building a Foundation for Compassionate Support

Education and continuous learning have been cornerstones in my career. My academic path includes a Bachelor of Social Work with Honours First Class, focusing on grief and loss, a Master of Primary Health Care specialising in Addictions, and a Master of Social Work in advanced practice specialising in family and couple therapy. These qualifications have broadened my perspective, enhancing my ability to support those dealing with complex emotional experiences.

  • Illuminating the Path of Sibling Bereavement

Spotlighting drug-related sibling bereavement remains at the forefront of my goals. My PhD research, combined with the practical application of the 5-Step Method, aims to deepen our collective understanding of this type of bereavement. As an accredited practitioner of the evidence-based 5-Step Method, I offer a supportive intervention for families navigating the challenges of drug and alcohol use.
